Kesämantelissa matkataan kauemmas kotoa kuin koskaan aiemmin.
Luukku taltioitiin Durbanissa Etelä-Afrikassa, kun JAMK vieraili Durbanin teknillisessä yliopistossa. Ohjelmassa sitä ei ollut. Mitään siitä ei suunniteltu etukäteen.
Kaikki tapahtui taideluokassa, jonka seinällä oli suuri hiilipiirros eMakhosinin muistomerkistä. Muistomerkki seisoo Kuninkaiden laaksossa, zulukuningaskunnan syntysijoilla, ja sen teki sama mies joka nyt esitteli sitä meille. Nkosinathi Khanyile on yliopiston lehtori ja sai teoksesta toimeksiannon vuonna 2001. Hän puhui siitä, miten syvästi taide ja musiikki kantavat historiaa ja identiteettiä Etelä-Afrikassa. Ne eivät ole koristetta vaan tapa pitää kiinni siitä kuka on. Sitten Nessia Hart, Yaya Soulful ja Andiswa Hobe alkoivat laulaa, aivan piirroksen edessä.
Kappale on eteläafrikkalainen perinnesävelmä. Sen zulunkieliset sanat ylistävät meren ja luonnon suurta voimaa, amandla amaningi. A cappella -harmonioiden lisäksi tallenteelta välittyy se ilo ja läsnäolo, joka huoneessa vallitsi.
Tätä olisi väärin kutsua vieraille järjestetyksi esitykseksi. Huoneessa avattiin ovi zuluhistoriaan ja identiteettiin, ja meidät päästettiin siitä sisään. Sellaista ei voi pyytää. Olimme otettuja siitä, että saimme olla mukana.
Musiikki ja taide avaavat syvän yhteyden kulttuurien välille ilman yhteistä kieltä. Juuri niin tässä kävi, eikä tilanne tuntunut vieraalta vaan tutulta. Ajatus siitä, että olemme olemassa toistemme kautta ja että yhteys rakentuu teoissa, on Ubuntun ytimessä. Tunnistimme sen tuhansien kilometrien päässä kotoa.
Alun perin tallenteen ympärille oli tarkoitus rakentaa sovitus Suomessa. Kokeilimme, ja luovuimme siitä. Äänet eivät tarvinneet mitään alleen. Itse ajatus jäi silti kytemään, ja otimme sen puheeksi laulajien kanssa vielä Durbanissa. He innostuivat. Yaya Soulful tekee lauluja ja laulaa, työskentelee laajasti Durbanin musiikkikentällä ja tekee jatkuvasti yhteistyötä muiden artistien kanssa. Hän näki heti, mihin tästä voisi päästä.
Vielä yksi asia. Yksikään suositusalgoritmi ei olisi tarjonnut tätä minulle. Se ei olisi voinut. Mikään kuunteluhistoriassani ei osoita tähän suuntaan, kappale ei ollut löytämistään odottava sisältö, eikä se ollut edes aikataulussamme. Se syntyi siitä, että joukko ihmisiä oli samassa huoneessa ja joku alkoi laulaa.
Juuri siksi tällaisia kohtaamisia ei voi jättää sattuman varaan. Niiden mahdollistaminen on työtä, ja se työ on meidän. Nyt enemmän kuin koskaan. Maailmankuva ei laajene muuten kuin kohtaamalla ihmisiä ja tekemällä yhdessä.
Käy kuuntelemassa, ja kuule ihmisäänten voima. Tämä on ensimmäinen asia, joka Äänekosken ja Durbanin väliselle sillalle syntyi. Tuskin viimeinen.
The newest release travels further from home than any before it.
It was recorded in Durban, South Africa, during a visit by JAMK University of Applied Sciences to the Durban University of Technology — and it was not on the programme. Nothing about it was planned. It happened in an art room, in front of a large charcoal drawing of the eMakhosini Heritage Monument. The monument stands in the Valley of the Kings, where the Zulu Kingdom began, and it was made by the man showing it to us: Nkosinathi Khanyile, a lecturer at the university, who was commissioned to build it in 2001. He spoke about how deeply art and music carry history and identity in South Africa — not as decoration, but as a way of holding on to who you are. Then Nessia Hart, Yaya Soulful and Andiswa Hobe sang, standing right in front of the drawing.
The song is a South African traditional, its Zulu lyrics celebrating the great power of the sea and of nature (amandla amaningi). Beyond the a cappella harmonies, the recording carries the genuine joy and presence of that moment.
It would be wrong to describe this as a performance arranged for visitors. What happened in that room was a visit into Zulu history and identity, and we were let into it. That is not something you can ask for, and we were moved to be included.
Music and art can open a deep connection across cultures with no shared language at all. That is what happened here — and it felt familiar rather than foreign. The idea that we come to exist through one another, and that connection is built in what we do, is at the heart of Ubuntu. We recognised it thousands of kilometres from home.
The plan had been to build an arrangement around the recording, back in Finland. We tried — and then let it go: the voices needed nothing under them. The idea itself stayed, though, and we raised it with the singers while still in Durban. They were in. Yaya Soulful, a songwriter and vocalist who works across the Durban scene and collaborates constantly with other artists, was quick to see where it could go.
One more thing. No recommendation algorithm would ever have served me this. It could not have — nothing in my listening history points here, the song was not a piece of content waiting to be found, and it was not even on our schedule. It existed because a group of people were in the same room, and someone started singing.
That is why encounters like this cannot be left to chance. Making sure they keep happening is work, and it is our work — now more than ever. There is no other way to widen your picture of the world than to meet people and make something with them.
Come listen — and hear the power of human voices. This is the first thing to come out of the bridge between Äänekoski and Durban. It is unlikely to be the last.
